Mission
To establish and maintain an
independent living program for deaf or hard of hearing adults who have
additional disabilities and need some assistance with daily living and work
skills. The program will be a place where the residents feel safe, their
functional and communication needs are met, and they are encouraged to do as
much for themselves as possible. …
The program will
provide:

access with staff and peers

well-trained staff
to assist the residents as needed

responsibilities and
activities to promote a positive self-esteem

access to the
community for work, church, recreation, appointments, etc.

Vision
a.
Residences will be clustered
- to
support communication needs of the
residents.
b.
Residences will be urban -
close to work, transportation, health
care, support services, involvement in the community-at-large
include enough property to allow
residents to have a large garden.
c.
Residences will house 4-6 persons each and serve a total of 18-20 individuals.
d.
Residences will include a central building to be used for meetings, work related
training, community activities, etc.
e.
Residences will be single-sex, not co-ed
Admissions Criteria
Applicants should…
•
Be deaf or hard of hearing and use, or
be willing to learn, ASL
•
At least 21 years of age
•
Adults who have additional
disabilities which preclude them from living independently
•
Demonstrate basic self-care (i.e.: not
be in need of attendant services)
•
Demonstrate the willingness and
ability to live in a group environment (not a danger to self or others).
•
Have
evidence/documentation/willingness to work
•
Family involvement and 3-6 month trial
run
